The title of "Wiseman" is said to bring fame, wealth, and power beyond one's dreams. But the reason Charlotte Belew desires to obtain it is nothing so petty.

Brought up among nobility, Charlotte's personality is what one would expect: she believes herself to be better than all the rest. But this haughty and proud persona is a mask hiding the nightmares that always return to haunt her. An incident from her past tore apart the bonds supporting her and caused the young Charlotte to live shunned by the aristocrats and mocked by the impoverished. Not wanting to relive those moments ever again, Charlotte seals her heart and swears to do whatever she has to in order to survive and retaliate against those who look down at her. If Charlotte obtains the title of "Wiseman," not only can she clear away the incident of the past, but also relieve the punishment her family took. And then, maybe, she can return to the warm family home that she once loved.

But until that day comes, Charlotte cannot show a hint of fear or weakness. She must stay strong. Otherwise, everything that she had worked for will go to waste. Stopping to looking back would force her to acknowledge all the underhanded and desperate tactics she had to resort to in order to make it this far. Her heart must be clear of all emotion; her eyes must focus only on the one thing that truly matters to her. She does not care how many times she must soil her hands if it means getting her family back together again. And as she slowly succumbs to the dark path that she believes to be the only one available to her, her allies and companions, the same people who are her rivals for the "Wiseman" title, will be there to remind her of the one path she never considered taking, the path she could have taken had she searched for even a minute longer: the path of hope.
